Established in 1970, Akron Institute has been serving the
community for over 30 years as a provider of hands-on,
job-related skills training. Our programs in allied health,
information technology and administration have helped Akron
Institute graduates begin rewarding and challenging careers
throughout the tri-county area.

objectives. Our programs are designed to ensure that the skills
and knowledge we teach our students parallel those in demand in
the workplace.
The goal of the dental assistant program is to train the student
to become a productive member of the dental health team. This
includes preparing the student for a variety of duties performed
by the dental assistant in the contemporary dental office,
including chair side assisting, laboratory procedures,
administrative duties and expanded functions. Our ultimate goal
is to prepare students to successfully gain entry-level
employment as a dental assistant. The average length of time it
takes to complete the program, for a student taking a full course
load, is four semesters. Sixty-four semester credit hours are
required for graduation.

Dental assistants are trained in chair side assisting,
four-handed dentistry, radiology and the use of dental materials.
In addition, they manage financial records, complete insurance
forms and schedule patients. Upon completion of the dental
assistant program, graduates are eligible to take the radiology
licensure examination of Ohio to become a dental x-ray machine
operator. These students may also sit for the Ohio Dental
Association Certification Examination upon graduation and for the
General Chairside Examination given by the Dental Assisting
National Board after two years of full-time work experience and
after having qualified for CPR Certification.

The introduction of students to the overall operation of the
physician's office is the basic objective of this program.
Students are trained to assist the physician in the examination
room, to perform routine laboratory procedures and to handle
financial records, correspondence, insurance forms and other
administrative functions. Our ultimate goal is to prepare
students to successfully gain entry-level employment as a medical
assistant. The average length of time it takes to complete the
program, for a student taking a full course load, is four
semesters. Sixty-one semester credit hours are required for

Medical assistants make up the largest group of allied health
occupations, working side-by-side with both physicians and
professional medical personnel in private practice, clinics,
medical research laboratories and hospitals. After completion of
the accredited program, graduates may take the certification
examination given by the American Association of Medical
Assistants at the next scheduled examination date.

The goal of the medical billing and insurance coding program is
to provide the student with a thorough understanding of the
content of the medical record as well as extensive training in
anatomy, physiology, disease processes and medical terminology.
This program will provide the student with the knowledge and
understanding to analyze medical records and assign codes to
classify diagnoses and procedures while applying the principles
of professional and ethical conduct. The program will prepare the
student for an entry-level position as a medical coder in a
hospital, clinic or other health care facility. The average
length of time it takes to complete the program, for a student
taking a full course load, is four semesters. Sixty-three
semester credit hours are required for graduation.

The medical billing career continues to expand as more emphasis
is placed on proper generation of health care claims such as
Medicare, Medicaid, Workers' Compensation and Blue Cross. In
addition, medical billers manage financial records, schedule
patients, transcribe records and use computer software to perform
front office duties.
