Health Services Information Specialist (HSIS) - Certificate

The HSIS program is a 28-week, 520-hour program. Students are required to pass seven exams, each of which provides a valid measuring tool to evaluate the student's competencies and knowledge of medical office operations. Exams cover medical billing, insurance, terminology, and applying proper diagnostic and procedural coding to claim forms and medical records within state and Federal guidelines. In addition, students must successfully complete the requirements of a 120-hour (eight-week) externship with a sponsoring health services organization. The externship has important benefits for students, enabling them to:

  • Gain valuable hands-on experience in a healthcare environment
  • Meet and network with professionals in the healthcare industry
  • Utilize learned educational skills in real-life scenarios
  • Identify aptitudes, likes and dislikes for various positions

Direct placement assistance is included with each TechSkills vocational education program. Placement services include:

Medical Billing - Certificate

Medical billing professionals perform a range of tasks encompassing the billing and accounts receivable management functions of a healthcare practice. Their major responsibility is to accurately submit claims and patient statements in order to receive the correct reimbursement for medical services rendered, in the shortest amount of time. This program prepares students for positions such as medical reimbursement specialist, patient accounts representative and other similar roles.

Healthcare providers depend on medical coders to ensure quality patient care, compliance and financial profitability. Coding professionals fulfill these needs through providing concise clinical data that is compliant and maximizes reimbursement. The medical coding program prepares students for positions such as medical coding specialist, medical records technician and other similar roles. The program also prepares students for the Certified Coding Associate exam, enabling them to earn a widely recognized industry certification.

The Medical Transcriptionist (MT) program is a 28 week, 560 hour vocational training program. Candidates in the MT track are required to pass nine exams and successfully complete the requirements of externship. Each exam provides a valid and reliable measuring tool in evaluating the medical office-related competency of transcriptionist knowledge. Candidates will obtain the skills necessary to provide physicians and other healthcare professionals with dictated recordings of medical reports that will become a part of medical records.

Pharmacy technicians work in a variety of practice settings including retail, independent, hospital and many more. Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, a technician performs a variety of tasks including assisting the pharmacist in filling prescriptions, compounding medications, assisting patients and ordering supplies. The pharmacy technician program equips students with the skills to begin a rewarding career in pharmacy. The program also helps prepare students for the Certified Pharmacy Technician exam, which enables them to earn a widely recognized industry certification.
